If you could pick one city on Earth that looks the most like it just stepped out of another dimension, it would likely be Bangkok. While large swaths of this beautiful and mesmerizing city appear quite Western, other parts look like something from a science fiction novel. With temples, shrines and other breathtaking and mind bending buildings around every corner, it is easy to feel a little discombobulated, but you won’t ever feel apprehensive. That’s because in spite of how different Bangkok feels from any traditional Western vacation destination, it never feels alien. In fact, Bangkok might just be one of the warmest and friendliest destinations in the world. The differences never seem to push you away. Instead, they draw you closer so that you learn and absorb this fascinating new place.

Bangkok has been a tourist Mecca for centuries, and thanks to that ease and ability to deal with people from far-off lands, the number of high end hotel rooms here is massive. Bangkok also has an excellent mixture of rooms with the usual Western amenities, as well as many smaller boutique hotels and many Asian-based chains that offer a whole new experience when it comes to four and five star accommodations. In short, you can’t really go wrong with a high end bed in this town, and every new night offers a new experience.

While the majority of people come to Bangkok for the sights, the rest come for the amazing food. Again, Bangkok’s reputation as an ancient tourist capital has helped infuse the restaurant industry here with variety, creativity and an endless number of choices. Experience unique and startling takes on local Thai cuisine on your first night and then take a seat at a steakhouse that would fit right in with downtown Houston the next night. Looking for fine Parisian dining? Not a problem. Finish your vacation with sushi, Chinese or both. Everything is possible here, which is why Bangkok is always at or near the top of most people’s vacation wish list.

And we haven’t even talked about the famous, or infamous, Bangkok nightlife scene yet. Without giving away too much, let’s just say that everything you’ve ever heard is true, and then some. The desert gambling capital of Las Vegas might have trademarked the phrase, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” but a similar phrase could be used for Bangkok. With hundreds of clubs, baths and other nighttime activities, the night can last all day long here if you want it to.

Finally, the sight seeing here is second to none. The city of Bangkok and the surrounding areas have done a fantastic job preserving historical sites and many of the impressive religious structures are open at all hours and welcome outside tourists. Bangkok is a city that thrives on spectacle and the spectacular, so don’t be surprised if you witness something amazing every day that you’re here. There are only so many spots on the map that honestly feel like you’re walking on a giant movie set, and Bangkok more than meets those qualifications.
